Liebermann drug test reagent

Liebermann reagent is generally used with other reagent tests to help identify certain cathinones (“bath salts”), MDMA, cocaine and other psychoactive substances. A drop or two of Liebermann Drug Test is added to a small amount of the test substance, and the resulting colour change and its duration compared to a reference chart of known colour reactions. Different compounds produce different colour reactions.

Performing a Liebermann Drug Test

Liebermann reagent is composed of a mixture of potassium nitrite and concentrated sulfuric acid. Potassium nitrite may also be substituted by sodium nitrite.

  1. Put a drop of reagent on a glass or porcelain surface.
  2. Take a small sample of the substance and add it to the reagent.
  3. Immediately compare the resulting colour change to the references below. No colour change after one minute should be taken as a sign of the presence of one or more unknown substances.
